Getting Started with Obsidian
Obsidian is a powerful knowledge base that works on top of a local folder of plain text Markdown files. In this note, we’ll cover the basics of getting started with Obsidian and how to integrate it with your Foxi theme website.
What is Obsidian?
Obsidian is a note-taking application that emphasizes linking between notes to create a network of knowledge. It’s built on plain text Markdown files, which makes it perfect for integration with static site generators like Astro.
Installing Obsidian
- Go to obsidian.md and download the installer for your platform
- Install and launch Obsidian
- Create a new vault (a folder where your notes will be stored)
Basic Features
Creating Notes
To create a new note in Obsidian:
- Click the “New note” button in the left sidebar
- Give your note a title
- Start writing in Markdown
Linking Notes
One of Obsidian’s most powerful features is the ability to link between notes:
- Use double square brackets to create a link:
[[Another Note]] - As you type, Obsidian will suggest existing notes
- Click on links to navigate between notes
Using Markdown
Obsidian supports standard Markdown syntax:
- Headers with
#(e.g.,# Heading 1,## Heading 2) - Lists with
-or* - Bold with
**text** - Italic with
*text* - Code blocks with triple backticks
- And much more!
Integrating with Foxi Theme
To use Obsidian with your Foxi theme website:
- Set up your Obsidian vault in the
src/contentdirectory of your Astro project - Create notes in the appropriate collections (e.g.,
blogornotes) - Use the front matter format as shown at the top of this file
Now you can edit your website content in Obsidian and have it automatically appear on your site!
